Three notable Czech composers-Ervin Shulhoff, Rudolf Karel and Pavel Haas-were all put to death in Nazi concentration camps. But it is two younger Czech composers that were less direct casualties of the Nazis who may have been the greatest musical loss. A 25-year-old Vitezslava Kapralova, with a small but impressive catalog of works, died in Montpellier, France, where she had developed tuberculosis in 1940 while attempting to flee ultimately to the U.S. And a frail Jaroslav Jezek fled Czechoslovakia in 1938 and made his way to New York, where he died nearly blind on New Year's Day, 1942, at the age of 35.

Brnensky hudebni maj. [...] Treti hodnotny porad tydne pak pripravila JAMU. Skupina mladych interpretu (pianista J. Smykal a Zd. Duchoslav, houslista B. Smejkal, violoncellistka M. Darkova, pevkyne A. Formankova a ze souboru Brnenske dechove kvinteto) venovala slavnostni porad dilu skladatelske moravske generace, jejiz zivotni osudy prervala nebo tvrde poznamenala skutecnost fasisticke okupace. Z brnenskych koncertu. Na pondelnim veceru Janackovy akademie musickych umeni zaujala dila predcasne zemrele Vitezslavy Kapralove melodickou pruraznosti a neobycejne vyspelou skladebnou technikou. Nikde stopy po tvurcich rozpacich zeny, ktera zemrela v ranem mladi, jsouc plna zivotniho optimismu. Jeji pisne z cyklu "Vteriny" a "Zpivano do dalky" zazpivala ponekud hlasove indisponovana Z. Lidmilova za precisniho klavirniho doprovodu O. Petranove. H. Stonavska podala vyrovnany a promysleny vykon v klavirnich "Dubnovych preludiich" a velmi sympaticky se predstavila take jako citliva doprovazecka dr. B. Dejmkove, ktera s velkym pochopenim zpivala "Navzdy." Zd. Duchoslav hral klavirni "Variations..." s vrcholnou technickou jistotou a vyrazovou pregnanci.
